The Coastal Hazards, Equity, Economic prosperity, & Resilience (CHEER) project is a large scale, NSF-funded, research hub dedicated to understanding the complex issues facing households, communities, policymakers, and other stakeholders as they prepare for, endure, and recover from hurricanes. Our Summer Scholars program is an investment in the next generation of researchers. In this second year of this program, we will foster inquiry and broaden the participation of undergraduate students in disaster science, policy, and practice. Participants in the Summer Scholars program will collaborate across disciplines and learn from leading researchers, policymakers, and practitioners about hurricane preparation, response, and recovery. Our goals are to improve community and individual outcomes with a focus on equity and inclusion. The Summer Scholars program is a 6-week, residential, funded research opportunity that runs from June 17th to July 25th in Greenville, North Carolina at East Carolina University. We are looking for applicants who will bring their discipline-based knowledge and curiosity to consider how to co-create knowledge with practitioners, policymakers, and private sector stakeholders to improve community, household, and individual resiliency. While participating in the program you will be (1) part of a cohort of students working on their own CHEER-related research projects, (2) matched with a CHEER faculty mentor who will provide guidance and support for your work, (3) receive training for your research project as part of the cohort team, (4) travel to communities and meet with practitioners and policymakers in Eastern North Carolina, (5) develop networks with your peers and leading scholars, and (6) present the results of your research to the CHEER team at end of the program. You do not need to create your own research project. We will work with you to develop a project that aligns your interests with the broad goals of the CHEER project. Your research project will be specified collaboratively and will inform the larger project thus positively impacting people and communities impacted by hurricanes, wind, and flooding. For more information about the project, the Summer Scholars program, our research team, and our community partners, explore our website: www.drc.udel.edu. APPLY by MARCH 15th.
