  • We Can Keep Safe

  • An overview of our program 'We Can Keep Safe'

The We Can Keep Safe programme is a safety education programme for children in early childhood (3-5yrs) and their families. It is delivered within an early childhood learning environment.

The concept of talking about personal safety and sexual safety with early learners can seem daunting and maybe even inappropriate, however, if done in an age-appropriate way, it is the way to prevent child sexual harm and reclaim the right of children to live a life free of abuse. This programme will help to give families and their children the language and confidence to talk about personal safety. As well as helping everyone to know how to respond when you have concerns about a child's safety and wellbeing.

The five We Can Keep Safe children’s modules teach age-appropriate skills using drama, games, songs, role-playing, storytelling and puppetry. Children learn the following personal safety skills in a context of learning about general safety:

    • Body awareness and body autonomy
    • Touches and feelings
    • Communicating needs and worries
    • Keeping safe
    • Keep telling until an adult listens if something is not okay.

This programme also includes an information session for parents/ caregivers and staff, home extension activities, and an evaluation process. It is now fully funded by Wright Family Foundation.
