The SGIF process can be completed in either in-person or online course formats.
In-Person Process
The SGIF takes about 25-30 minutes of classtime, during which the instructor steps out of the room to allow the SGIF facilitator to lead a confidential small group discussion, in which students respond to three questions:
1) What is going well in this course so far?
2) Do you have specific suggestions that could help improve your learning?
3) What other comments do you have about the learning environment?
Around a week later, the SGIF facilitator meets with the instructor to discuss the students' responses.
Online Process | Reserved for fully online courses. During the online process, students respond to the same three questions as the in-person process via an online questionnaire. Once complete, the SGIF facilitator meets with the instructor to discuss the students' responses.
Synchronous Online Option: Similar to the in-person small group discussions, the SGIF facilitator meets with your students via Zoom.
NEW OPTION! Class Visit + Student Feedback
This year, you can invite an ILC consultant into your classroom to observe the first portion of your class and then meet with students following the traditional SGIF protocol. Here is an example of what this will look like in a 50 minute class:
Pre-visit meeting:
You and your ILC consultant discuss via email or a pre-observation meeting your goals for the class. For instance, what should the ILC consultant be looking for? Are you curious if students are engaged during a particular activity?
Class day:
- First 30 minutes | ILC consultant observes
- Last 20 minutes | You step out and the ILC consultant leads an SGIF.
Post-visit debrief:
With your ILC consultant, examine student and observation feedback.
