  • Produce Survey and Registry 2024

Authorized by Wis. Stat. § 93.06(1)(f)
  • This survey is an element of the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s (DATCP) annual review to determine how the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR) applies to Wisconsin produce operations.  Each farm should verify their information with Safe Wisconsin Produce (SWP) annually.  By completing this survey, you will:

    • Help create a better picture of farms in the state so that services can be better tailored to the state’s growers. Survey information is used to better focus education and outreach efforts, and to efficiently deliver inspection and other customized services.
    • Have the opportunity to request Grower Trainings and non-regulatory services provided by the Safe Wisconsin Produce program including:
      • Wisconsin Produce Farm Registry
        • The Safe Wisconsin Produce (SWP) Registry provides produce farms in Wisconsin with a means of publicly displaying their participation with the PSR, in terms of receiving education by the SWP team, confirming their PSR status and reporting their audit or inspection results when applicable. This information may assist produce farmers with obtaining market access and offer assurance to end-consumers looking for local, safe, and wholesome produce.
      • Produce Safety Audits
        • If your farm is exempt or not otherwise covered, you can request a Produce Safety Audit.  An audit is a documented, non-regulatory assessment of a farm’s food safety practices, that is equivalent in scope to a PSR inspection, and provided at no-cost to growers seeking alternatives to inspection or third-party audits.
      • On-Farm Readiness Reviews
        • An On-Farm Readiness Review is an educational assessment of a farm’s existing food safety practices.  Having a review help identify how your operation currently aligns with the PSR and provides guidance on changes to better meet the rule.  Growers can then seek technical assistance on how best to make changes in preparation for federal inspections.
    • Assist DATCP in building and maintaining a produce farm database as part of a cooperative agreement between DATCP and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the implementation of the PSR under FSMA.

If you have questions about the survey, email our team at safeproduce@wi.gov or call (608) 224-4511.
