Since 2017, Sparks Within Reach has been an established, youth-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit working with NYC students facing housing insecurity. Over 250 college and high school students have been part of SWR, working to address housing insecurity and education inequality in NYC through providing much-needed academic and emotional support to at-risk students. Come join our team to gain valuable teaching and leadership experience and make some incredible memories!
We are currently recruiting high school students to become tutors at P.S. 188 (The Island School), a K-8 public school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Most of the students at P.S. 188 are low-income, facing housing insecurity, or otherwise at-risk. Tutors will have the opportunity to make a real impact with these students by providing them with one-on-one academic and social-emotional support during the P.S. 188 afterschool program!
The Sparks x P.S. 188 program will run from mid-January to June, and sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 PM. Tutors may choose to volunteer on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or both days. P.S. 188 is accessible by any train to 14th street and the M14D bus, as well as many other public transportation options.
We are looking for compassionate, dedicated 9th-12th grade students to join our team at P.S. 188 and help us make a difference in students' lives! If you are interested, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible through this form. Please note that no experience is required, as all instructors will be trained in tutoring methods, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed teaching. In addition, all tutors will receive community service hours for the time that they work.
More information about our organization can be found on our website (sparkswithinreach.org). Interested students may also reach out to contact@sparkswithinreach.org with any questions.
Thank you, and we hope to work with you soon!
