  • Mission

    The mission of the Global Refugee Accommodation Working Group (GRAWG) is to unite key stakeholders, including refuge and resettlement States, United Nations agencies, academia, and non-government organizations/non-profits together to collaboratively ensure global and cross-sector coordination, communication, and collaboration on accommodation/shelter/housing (ASH) challenges and opportunities to ensure dignified and safe living situations for people on the move worldwide.

  • Purpose

    Ensure cross-sector global coordination, communication, and collaboration to seize and innovate opportunities to address refugee accommodation/shelter/housing (ASH) challenges. To pursue its purpose, group leaders will undertake the following activities:

    1. Convene key sectoral stakeholders globally in a forum that meets regularly for sharing and learning.
    2. As relevant, promote innovative affordable ASH responses and solutions for refugees and other people newly arrived persons in counties beyond their own.
    3. Use a real-time, interactive communication platform and protocols for the Working Group and sub-groups.
    4. Use an info-data platform to track global accommodation/shelter/housing information, challenges, solutions, opportunities, successful initiatives, etc.
  • Scope

    The Global Refugee Accommodation Working Group will:

    • Initiate monthly GRAWG meetings on a shared workspace for the Group’s conversations, consultations, continuing education, and training, etc. to act on its Mission. 
    • With UNHCR support and concurrences, initiate other ASH/related conversations, consultations, etc. for (1) all resettlement States – large and small alike; (2) academia, and (3) NGO/non-profit sector.  
    • Regularly review ASH challenges/needs, both temporary and long-term, and identify ways to improve the situation for refugees by sharing best practice ASH ideas, innovations, and solutions. 
    • Monitor the interactive communications platform 
    • Share analyzed info-data as relevant   
    • Report at the February 2024 Consultations on Resettlement and Complementary Pathways (CRCP) Working Group (formerly known as the ATCR Working Group) on accomplishments to date, upcoming plans, and initiatives. Convene in-person GRAWG co-chair/facilitators meeting.  
    • Present initial GRAWG accomplishments (foundational documents and work; outreach; successes, etc.) at the 2024 Consultations on Resettlement and Complementary Pathways (CRCP) Working Group (formerly known as ATCR) and convene an in-person GRAWG meeting of members present.
