Torch of Wisdom Scholarship Application

INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYING FOR THE EAST POINT/ COLLEGE PARK ALUMNAE CHAPTER TORCH OF WISDOM SCHOLARSHIP

To be considered for a scholarship, a complete application packet MUST be received by March 1st at 11:59 PM.

1. Omission of any part of the application will eliminate the applicant from consideration.

2. Applicant must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative Grade Point Average on a 4.0 scale.

3. Applicant must select one (1) scholarship for which they would like to be considered. Selecting more than one (1) scholarship will eliminate the scholarship from consideration. Please see below for additional information regarding the First Generation Scholarship.

4. The applicant must live in the Metropolitan Atlanta area see: http://guides.main.library.emory.edu/sociology_atlanta for a list of counties.

5. Scholarships are only intended for study towards an associate or bachelor degree from an accredited two- or four-year institution. Scholarship funds may only be used for tuition and book expenses.

6. Parent/Guardian of applicant must sign Disbursement of Scholarship Funds Agreement.

7. Scholarship funds will be dispersed upon receiving a letter verifying the recipient’s enrollment at an accredited two- or four-year college or university. The enrollment verification form must be completed by the institution and contain: (a) the registrar’s signature and (b) the official seal of the institution. Scholarship checks will be made payable to the recipient and the college/university.

Scholarship Description

One (1) scholarship for the amount of $25,000 and one (1) scholarship in the amount of $12,500 will be awarded to a first-generation college student demonstrating financial need. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. First-generation college student (verified by school counselor)
2. Demonstrated financial need (FAFSA must be submitted)
3. Lives in the City of College Park, City of East Point, City of South Fulton, Clayton or South Fulton Counties or one of the following zip codes: 30311, 30331, 30336, 30337, 30344, 30315, 30213, 30268, 30272, 30291, 30296, 30331
4. Participate in an interview

**Important Note: Students interested in the Torch of Wisdom Scholarship may also apply for Presidential Scholarship if they meet the criteria. Students may be awarded either the Torch of Wisdome scholarship OR the Presidential Scholarship. Students may not receive BOTH. Recipients may choose to receive the scholarship funds in the first year or receive equal installments for up to four years.**

This letter must be from a Core Academic Teacher (Math, Science, Language Arts/English, Social Studies/History).

CATEGORY #2: CHARACTER RECOMMENDATION

This letter should be from a Minister, Community/Civic Leader, or Professional Person.

Please have your references submit a typed, signed letter of recommendation placed on letterhead. The letters should be addressed to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., East Point/College Park Alumnae Chapter and include:

• Name and occupation of reference
• The name of the applicant and relationship
• How long the reference has known the applicant
• Information regarding why the applicant should receive the scholarship award

Scholarship Application Disclaimer

Agreement for Disbursement of Scholarship Funds

I, First Name Last Name (Parent/Guardian) acknowledge and understand that the scholarship awards will may be disbursed in a lump sum payment OR disbursed in equal payments over multiple years. The payment will be made directly to the college/university identified by the scholarship recipient (Student's Name) First Name Last Name .

Scholarships will be awarded upon verification of enrollment from a college or university. Verification entails an enrollment form completed by the institution with the registrar’s signature and official seal of the institution.

Scholarship disbursements are mailed to institutions October 1 – April 1 annually. East Point/College Park Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated does not meet during the months of June, July and August; therefore, scholarship payments will not be processed until October 1.

Scholarship Awards must be claimed within four years of the award date or the award will be forfeited. No exceptions.
