Background information
At the conference the Estonian three “round 1” offshore wind projects will be introduced:
Saarewind 1.4GW wind farm by Saare Wind Energy;
Saare-Liivi 1.2 GW project by Utilitas;
Liivi Gulf of Riga 1+ GW project developed by the state owned Enefit Green.
Additionally the results of the auction of the “round 2 projects” taking place in January 2024 will be elaborated.
Estonia has set a high target to cover the country's entire electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2030 - currently the share of renewables is 30%, therefore there is huge hike in growth ahead. The MSP and laws (like local benefits law etc) are in place, however there is an ongoing debate in a society on how to achieve the 2030 electricity goals and what is the division between onshore and offshore wind. Onshore is attracting some decisions makers with its lover investment costs, however seeing the high demand for growth of renewables based sources, the offshore could offer more feasible solution. In Estonia there is also limited practice with offtake and the government will need to make several key decisions urgently and simultaneously.
At the conference the future role of the wind energy in the Estonian energy mix will be analysed: what is the impact of it to the local communities and the natural environment and what is the potential for the Estonian economy? Estonia, like all other countries developing on- and offshore wind is actively looking for consensus between technical achievements, community expectations, economic opportunities, demands for the educational system, challenging time-lines and high capital costs.
The Estonian Wind Energy Conference is taking place for the third time and the conference presents good networking prospects and facilitates valuable opportunities to gain insights of the Estonian wind sector. The conference is organised by the Estonian Wind Power Association in partnership with The Netherlands Embassy in Tallinn. The Ambassador of the Netherlands to Estonia, Mrs Özlem Canel is offering networking drinks at the end of the first conference day on February 13.
