Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be:
- from Hale County, Alabama
- a previous staff member or camper at Sawyerville Summer Camp (preference will be given to those who have been both a staff member and a camper)
- accepted or enrolled in an institution of college rank or a technical school
- pursuing a professional certification or degree
- able to show financial need
Application Process
Applications will open January 8, 2024 and close April 1, 2024. Scholarship awards will be made in April 2024.
An application for a scholarship may be made every year a student is in college or technical school. Preference will be given to those people that have not received a scholarship two years in a row in an effort to make room for new scholarship recipients as much as we can.
To apply by mail, students should mail a completed application to 521 20th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203. Applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2024.
A completed application includes:
- Application form*
- Recent transcript
- A brief description of your school and community accomplishments, your Sawyerville Summer Camp involvement, and what you hope to accomplish in the future by either attending college or a vocational program.
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Granted funds are mailed directly to the registrar’s office of the college or technical school of the recipient's choice.

*Please note that applicants must provide an email address, and they must check that email address regularly. We will award scholarships via email, and we expect recipients to communicate with us via email in regard to how to send the scholarship directly to his/her school. We also like to keep up with recipients throughout the year!
