    New Applicant
    The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office will process applications for Carry Concealed Handgun permits for Stokes County citizens only. If you reside in another county, then you must apply at that Sheriff’s Office.

    Once you have completed the firearms safety course and are ready to apply for your permit, you will need to contact the Sheriff’s Office to schedule an appointment by calling 336-593-2466. DO NOT SIGN THE FORMS. THIS MUST BE DONE IN FRONT OF A NOTARY. We have a notary on staff at the office.

    Appointments will be scheduled during the business hours Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30pm.

    Your application may take up to 90 days to process. We will make every effort possible to process you application in a timely manner.

    Once we receive your permit back from the State of NC, then someone from our office will call you to come to our office and pick it up. It is your responsibility to keep your information current with our office. You will have to pick up your permit in person because you have to sign the card in our presence.

    The application fee for a new applicant is $90.00. We do accept credit cards or debit cards.

    Concealed Handgun Renewals
    The Sheriff’s Office will process all renewal applications for Stokes County residents by appointment. You must apply before the expiration of your current carry concealed card. You cannot apply for a renewal more than 90 prior to the expiration of your permit.

    You can call 336-593-2466 to schedule your appointment.

    Complete the application forms and bring them with you. DO NOT SIGN THE FORMS. THIS MUST BE DONE IN FRONT OF A NOTARY. We have a notary on staff at the office.

    The fee for renewals is $75.00 dollars if you do not have to be fingerprinted and $85.00 if you do have to be fingerprinted.

    A Duplicate License or Change of Address (Must be done in the office)
    You may call the Sheriff’s Office to obtain an appointment to fill out the necessary documentation to obtain a duplicate card or change your demographic information. This process will only take a few minutes, but an appointment will make sure the appropriate people are here to handle the request.

    The only reason to file for a duplicate is to replace a lost or destroyed card. You cannot have 2 cards in your possession.

    The fee for a duplicate card is $15.00.

    What you must bring with you when you come to apply.

    If you do not have all the necessary paperwork, then we will NOT be able to accept your application.

    1.  The original firearms safety certificate for new applicants.

    2.  Government ID with current and correct information.

    3.  Your last DD-214 if you have any military experience.

    4.  Enough money to pay the fee when you apply.

    5.  Optional—The completed paperwork described under the application procedures.

    What you must do when stopped by an officer.
    North Carolina State Law requires when approached or addressed by any officer, you must IMMEDIATELY disclose the fact that you have a valid concealed handgun permit and inform the officer that you are in possession of a concealed handgun. You should not attempt to draw or display either your weapon or your permit to the officer unless and until he directs you to do so. Your hands are to be kept in plain view and you are not to make any sudden movements.
