Halloran Lab Mentorship Guidelines
1. Meeting Locations: To ensure safety and maintain a positive perception of our program, mentor-student sessions should be held on the Colby campus, or virtually.
2. Fulfill Commitments: Always strive to keep your promises. If you are unable to fulfill a commitment, make efforts to rectify the situation.
3. Be Responsive: As mentors, it's essential to provide timely and effective responses to students' requests. Quick and thoughtful communication demonstrates respect and dedication to their development and fosters a supportive learning environment.
4. Protect Sensitive Information: It is crucial to safeguard sensitive, confidential, or personal information. Use appropriate measures for security and always respect requests for privacy and confidentiality.
5. Disclose Conflicts of Interest Early: Be proactive in disclosing any known conflicts of interest. It's better to err on the side of over-disclosure than to risk an ethical lapse.
6. Financial Interests: Mentors or their related parties are not permitted to have equity interest in, receive compensation from, or acquire any other financial interest in ventures they mentor without prior written consent from the Director, Jeremy Barron, at jebarron@colby.edu. If a mentor or their related party gains a financial interest in a venture post-assignment, the mentor will be suspended from formal mentoring until the Director resolves the conflict, potentially leading to termination of the mentoring assignment.
7. Selling Services: Mentors are prohibited from selling their business services to mentees or their ventures. If a mentor charges mentees for business advice or engages in sales pitches, they will be suspended from formal mentoring activities until the Director decides on further action, which may include removal from the program.
8. Sexual Misconduct: We adhere to a zero-tolerance policy for sexual misconduct, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our students. Please review the Colby College Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Policy.
9. Mentorship Issue Resolution: Any issues, concerns, or incidents in association with the mentoring experience or relationship should be immediately brought to the attention of the Director, Jeremy Barron, at jebarron@colby.edu.
