Peruvian Inca Orchid Club of the United States Code of Ethics
I. Member Responsibilities:
A. Provide for all dogs in their keep:
1. Adequate food, water, shelter and sanitation and protection from bodily harm. Dogs must have indoor shelter to prevent sunburn and skin lesions.
2. Adequate grooming and skin care. Provide adequate exercise according to the breed's need.
3. Adequate veterinary care and immunizations required by law or veterinary recommendation. Euthanasia must be performed humanely by a licensed veterinarian
4. Proper identification for the dog (e.g. – tags, microchip, etc.).
5. Extensive socialization of this breed to help prevent behavioral problems.
B. Promote and protect the breed:
1. Behave as ambassador for both the breed and the club.
2. Abide by American Kennel Club (AKC) rules and regulations.
3. Become familiar with AKC and FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale or World Canine Organization) breed standards and breed specific education.
4. Provide breed education to owners, potential owners and the public.
5. Refuse to sell, donate, or surrender any Peruvian Inca Orchid to pet shops, wholesale dealers, for crossbreeding, dog fighting, lottery, raffle, auction or experimental laboratories. Refuse to sell to any individuals who will sell to the preceding.
6. Members will contact the club prior to surrendering a PIO to a shelter so that every effort can be made to rehome or foster the PIO in another home that is breed educated.
7. Encourage and/or assist Peruvian Inca Orchid rescue operations as they are able.
II. Breeder Responsibilities:
A. Maintain and improve the breed in accordance with the AKC standard (or the breed standard
recognized by their country for international members.)
B. Be familiar and follow AKC rules applicable to litter and individual registrations.
C. Breed only animals in good health and provide club suggested screenings prior to breeding.
D. Be educated in canine breeding, genetics and health.
E. Bitches should not be bred more than two of three consecutive seasons. Furthermore, they should not be bred until second heat cycle.
F. Will not breed solely for the purpose of profit.
G. Will not purposely mix‐breed. Should an accidental breeding occur, all puppies will be spayed or neutered.
H. Agree that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies that do not conform to the standard will be placed in suitable pet homes. Placed on limited registration and spayed/neutered at the appropriate age. Puppies born with congenital problems will be spayed or neutered and homed as a pet. If health issues are life threatening puppies will be humanely euthanized by a veterinarian.
I. Accurately represent pedigree, health history, temperament, and breeding records.
J. Negotiate all breeding agreements prior to breeding via a written contract.
K. Have qualified homes identified prior to breeding whenever possible.
L. Produce puppies only when breeder has the time, facilities, and resources to provide for proper care - both physical and emotional development as well as training.
M. Stud owners will not knowingly provide services to an unsound bitch. Stud owners must make sure all paperwork is in proper order before providing services. Stud dog owners will promptly sign and return the stud service certification when the terms of the contract have been satisfied
N. Whenever possible, notify owners of related dogs of any health or genetic problems which may occur during the dog's lifetime.
O. Will be responsible for all puppies produced during their lifetimes. Will provide owners guidance and support throughout the dog's life. Will take the dog back at any time during its lifetime or help to re‐home if it becomes necessary. If the breeder is unable to take back dog due to unforeseen circumstances, they
will contact the club to help place the dog in an appropriate home.
III. Seller Responsibilities:
A. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old when sold and in compliance with country, state, and local laws.
B. Find appropriate homes for all puppies. Research all potential buyers and provide dam and/or sire for buyer inspection if possible.
C. Provide healthy animals with appropriate immunizations and complete and accurate health records.
D. Educate potential buyers of breed and dog‐specific needs and care.
E. Advise buyer of any known health defect and temperament of individual dogs.
F. Transfer registration papers to the buyer at the time of sale or withhold papers only in accordance with AKC rules applying to individual registrations, or by written agreement with the buyer and notifying buyers of delays or difficulties in registration.
G. Provide in writing any/all health guarantees and/or compensations.
H. Will provide the PIOCUS a listing of all puppy homes for the purpose of tracking health data. (The PIOCUS will not use this data for any other purpose nor will it share this data).
IV. Conduct:
A. No individual may make a final decision on behalf of the PIOCUS.
B. Threatening, intimidating, or abusive behavior will not be tolerated.
C. Maliciously degrading another member's dog or kennel will not be tolerated.
D. Verbal threats and posting malicious comments on social media sites or public forums will not be tolerated.
E. Exhibit good sportsmanship and integrity at all times and positively represent the breed and club.
F. Falsification of records will not be tolerated.
V. Discipline:
A. Failure to follow the PIOCUS Code of Ethics may be cause for discipline or expulsion from PIOCUS.
B. Suspension of AKC privileges for any reason will result in PIOCUS suspension. PIOCUS membership will be reinstated when the AKC reinstates.
C. In case of any business transaction involving Peruvian Inca Orchids, the PIOCUS will refuse to become involved with any grievance brought against another member unless a written contract or documents signed by both parties are submitted with the grievance.
