Placenta Services

 

 YOUR ROLE AS A CLIENT

As a client, there are a few things you will need to have or do in order for me to procure the placenta from the birthing establishment, I will list them below.

• You must provide a cooler or a cooler bag for most area hospitals to allow you to leave with the placenta, or for me to pick it up. I often suggest grabbing a disposable cooler bag for $1.25 at Dollar Tree that you may fill up with ice in the hospital. Put this in your hospital bag.
• Please reach out to me either at the beginning of labor, or shortly after delivery if possible. Place the placenta in the cooler on ice asap, until I receive it.
• If I am picking up the placenta from the hospital, please have a partner or support person ready to meet me at the front lobby. 

• I will do my best to procure the placenta within 24hrs of the birth, however this is not always possible. I am not able to pick up the placenta overnight, I will pick it up the next day. I do not cancel events to pick up placentas, I will either wait until later in the evening, or the next day.Weather and road conditions may affect this as well. If the placenta is not able to be picked up within 72hrs of delivery, you may place it in the freezer. 
• After pickup of the placenta, you can expect the final product to be finished usually in 72hrs and then delivered back to you. I only process one placenta at a time for your safety so in the chance that I have back to back placentas, I will process and finish the first one before starting the second- I work as quickly as possible to get the placenta back to you as soon as I can while also making sure to protect your safety and to allow for disinfecting and sanitizing between each. 
• I will deliver all items back to you in the cooler that I received it in, unless it is no longer usable.
• PLEASE NOTE- If you have purchased an add-on service the turn around time may take an additional 48 hrs as depending on the service, your placenta may need to infuse for the healing salves and body butters, and the artwork may need extra drying time.
• ADDITIONAL NOTE- If you are purchasing an add-on, but NO ENCAPSULATION, a delivery fee will be added of $20 in the Des Moines metro- these are also considered non-urgent pick-ups and I will pick up the placenta at a time that is most convenient for both parties as we don't need to process the placenta for consumption. In this case, the placenta can be frozen immediately. 

WHAT TO INFORM YOUR PROVIDER OF

• It's imperative that you inform your provider and birthing staff that you are keeping your placenta. Maybe even several times, and immediately upon the birth. It is up to you to tell them what you are doing with it, every person no matter the outcome has a right to their placenta. If you have issues with your provider, please request to speak with a patient advocate. Most of the area hospitals are on board with and familiar with placenta encapsulation or placenta keeping.
• Meconium presence or GBS+ status are not reasons to forgo encapsulation. This is a common misunderstanding- you can still encapsulate with these present. Choosing to forgo for these reasons will not be refunded the retainer.
• CHORIO INFECTION- CHORIOAMNIONITIS- If present, the placenta can no longer be encapsulated for consumption, however I can still do prints and cord keepsakes.
• If a provider suggests or demands having the placenta examined by pathology it is your choice, you may say no or request a gross-examination (not chemically treating it), or allow them to take a small piece for examination purposes only.
• It is preferred that the umbilical cord is left as long as possible on the placenta- this is so that I can create a beautiful print for you or keepsake.

 

RETAINER FEE

Retainer fee for placenta services is $50 and is non-refundable, unless I am unable to perform this service for some reason of MY OWN FAULT, or in the unfortunate event of fetal loss. 

 

PICKUP/DELIVERY FEES

Pickup from all DSM area hospitals is included in the encapsulation services. Delivery must be within the DSM area or within 15 miles to avoid a delivery charge. Home birth pick up/delivery must be within 15 miles of DSM to avoid additional charge.

I am also more than willing to meet someone within the 15 mile radius to avoid the travel fee. 

There is also a delivery fee of $20 for those who are only purchasing an art package.

SHIPPING

Shipping is a flat rate of $50, I will send a shipping container with all the instructions included. If you are requesting shipping services after you have already delivered, immediately freeze the placenta in a gallon freezer ziplock bag, until the shipping container gets to you.

Payment is due prior to picking-up or processing the placenta.
