PIERCING BUMP ADVICE
What is a piercing bump?
Piercing bumps can appear on a piercing for a variety of different reasons. The bumps are not permanent, and can be very easily treated.
They are not to be confused with keloids – keloids are uncommon and can only be removed by a medical professional. Please see your GP if you are concerned that you have a keloid.
Causes of bumps
· Knocking or bumping the area of the piercing
· Incorrect jewellery metal (e.g. not wearing titanium in a fresh, healing piercing)
· Incorrect type of jewellery being worn (e.g. rings in unhealed nose piercings)
· Pressure being applied to the piercing (e.g. sleeping on the piercing, wearing headphones/hats)
· Overcleaning and undercleaning
· Cleaning your piercing with anything other than sterile saline solution (no surgical spirit, alcohol, soap, TCP etc)
· Touching or playing with the piercing
· Overdue a downsize – jewellery that is too long can cause bumps to form, see your piercer to find out when you need to downsize!
Treating the bump
Once the cause of irritation is identified and addressed, the bump should subside on its own. If you are unsure or need help identifying the cause of the bump, see your piercer for further advice.
