Workshop Description - 4th through 12th graders only
The "Vision of Tomorrow: Afrofuturism Video Game Workshop Series" program is a three-week immersive experience designed to introduce students in grades 4th to 12th to the exciting world of character design, storyboarding, and Afrofuturism architecture using Lego bricks. The program aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and cultural awareness through interactive and hands-on activities. By the end of the program, participants will have gained a deep understanding of the principles of character design, storyboarding, and the unique aesthetics of Afrofuturism architecture.
The Program will run from 5:30 to 8:30 pm on Tuesday, December 10th and 9 am to 12 Noon on Saturdays, December 14 and 21. We are asking the students for a 3 week commitment. Lunch will be provided.
Program Schedule and Activities:
Week 1 (December 10th): Character Design and Development
Duration: 2 hours
- Introduction to character design and its importance in storytelling (20 mins)
- Exploring different character archetypes and their traits (20 mins)
- Hands-on activity: Designing and sketching original characters using templates provided (60 mins)
- Group discussion and sharing of character designs (20 mins)
- Homework assignment: Character backstory development
Week 2 (December 14th): Storyboarding
Duration: 2 hours
- Introduction to storyboarding as a visual storytelling tool (20 mins)
- Understanding the elements of a story arc and narrative structure (20 mins)
- Hands-on activity: Creating a storyboard using Legos and sketches to visually represent a chosen story or scene (60 mins)
- Group critique and feedback session (20 mins)
- Homework assignment: Refining and improving storyboards
Week 3 (December 21st): Afrofuturism Architecture with Legos
Duration: 2 hours
- Introduction to Afrofuturism architecture and its cultural significance (20 mins)
- Discussion on the unique elements and characteristics of Afrofuturism architecture (20 mins)
- Hands-on activity: Building Afrofuturism-inspired structures using Legos, incorporating futuristic design elements (60 mins)
- Presentation and sharing of the constructed architectural designs (20 mins)
- Conclusion and certificate distribution (20 mins)
