The General Pediatric Preceptorship Program helps address the pediatric workforce shortage while inspiring the next generation of pediatricians. Research shows that medical students who complete the program are significantly more likely to pursue careers in pediatrics.

During the experience, students progress from shadowing to taking patient histories and interacting with pediatric patients under direct supervision — gaining meaningful, hands-on clinical exposure.

Eligibility Requirements

• Preceptor must be board certified in pediatrics and hold a current Texas medical license
• Preceptor must spend at least 50% of their time practicing general pediatrics
• Preceptor provides daily personal instruction and supervision to a medical student
• Preceptorship time commitment ranges from two (2) to four (4) weeks during the summer
• Scheduling is flexible, and preceptors may share a student with one or more colleagues in their practice
• We work with you to match timing and clinic flow

Summer Preceptorships

Preceptorships last two (2) to four (4) weeks and may be scheduled as consecutive or non-consecutive weeks. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate clinic flow and preceptor availability.

Medical students most frequently request placements in June and July, but preceptorships may be scheduled anytime through mid-August.

Please list below any dates when you would not be available to accept a student. If you have full availability, you may leave this question blank.

We always confirm specific dates with you before finalizing a match — this information simply helps us plan ahead and place students more efficiently.

I hereby give the Texas Pediatric Society, the Texas Chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics, its successors and assigns those acting under its permission or upon its authority, the unqualified right and permission to reproduce, copyright, publish, circulate, or otherwise use my name/or photographic likeness of me still, single, multiple or moving in which I may be included in whole or in part, or composite. I waive any right to inspect or approve the finished product, products, or copy that may be used or the use to which it may be applied. This authorization and release covers the use of said materials in any published or broadcast form, and any medium of advertising, publicity, or trade in any part of the world for any unlimited period of time.
