    SOAR Travel Award Application
  • Eligibility Criteria

    • Students must have an approved NICER form, Student Scholarship & Inquiry Project Approval form, or be registered in a special research elective before initiating any research activity/project.
    • The project start date must be accurately indicated in the NICER form and SOAR Travel Award application. Do not submit a request for a SOAR Travel Award if the research did not have appropriate prior approvals via the NICER, Inquiry or special research elective outlined above. Travel Awards applications that do not establish prior approval will be denied.
    • The SOAR Travel Award asks for the project start date. It is expected that this date will align with the date for the relevant NICER/Inquiry/Special Research Elective, and precede the abstract submission date.
    • Students should submit the SOAR travel application a minimum of six weeks prior to the conference/meeting date.
    • Students must be selected to present research findings at the conference/meeting.
    • Students must be the first author and presenter of the paper/poster/abstract that clearly describes research findings.
    • The research being presented must have been conducted while the student was in medical school under the guidance of a BCM faculty member from BCM or one of its affiliated institutions.
    • Students must not be on “at risk” or probation academic status.
      Students must be currently enrolled in the School of Medicine to receive the funding (e.g. not graduated).
    • Students must not be on leave of absence at the time of application for any reason.
    • This award is not intended to support dual-degree students who performed research as part of their dual-degree training.
    • The travel funds are provided after travel is completed. Students must submit all receipts within 30 days of the travel date, or reimbursement requests will be denied.
  • Applicants will be required to provide the following information/documentation 

    • Student contact information: name, phone number, email, address, and class year.
    • Research mentor information: name, department, email, and project start day.
    • Conference information: conference name, day, and location.
    • Documents in PDF format: Absence Letter, proof of NICER form, Student Scholarship & Inquiry Project Approval form, or enrollment in special research elective, mentor letter of support, copy of the abstract (title, authors, and body), and proof of abstract accepted for presentation. 
    • Anticipated travel costs.
