    2024 Application
  • Program Description: The Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology are offering a six-week Neuroscience Summer Research Program for rising 2nd year New York Medical College Students for 2024. The program is led by two faculty members of the Neurosurgery Department: Jared Pisapia, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Fawaz Al-Mufti, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology. The primary focus of the program is on research. Students have the ability to pursue two different tracks for this program:

    1. Integrated Clinical & Research: Students will be assigned a research project AND be assigned clinical responsibilities. Clinical responsibilities include one week of shadowing in a variety of neuroscience specialities. Students are expected to be in-person for all clinical and didactic activities.
    2. Research Only: Students will ONLY be assigned a research project. There will be no in-person clinical responsibilities and didactics can be attended virtually.

    Students in the program will:

    • Participate in a research project under the guidance of a faculty preceptor. The program provides an opportunity for students to become immersed in a research project to which they can actively contribute, with the objective of producing a publishable manuscript.
    • Present one’s project in an informal setting attended by other students and the programs Co-Directors.
    • Be provided an introduction into clinical neuroscience.
    • Attend departmental lectures and workshops over the course of the summer.
    • Meet with a research mentor on a weekly basis to review assigned tasks and monitor progress.

Program participants will be expected to:

    • Commit to the full six weeks of the program from Tuesday, May 28th through Monday, July 8th, 2024
    • Affirm their academic standing immediately prior to the start of the summer program
    • Complete required Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) courses: (1) All research – basic course for biomedical researchers; and (2) Conflict of Interest course prior to the start of their research project.
    • Apply for a Summer Research Fellowship sponsored by the Office of Medical Student Affairs
