Hello Guardian!
Dr. Paula Pilcher is so excited to provide the Roadside Emergencies Workshop after the success of the workshop in the past, and demand for it to be offered again.
The workshop is for ages 11-18 and participants will be grouped by vehicles according to age so they can engage with their peers.
Your teen doesn't need to have a driver's license or even a learner's permit, because the premise of this workshop is that if they're in a car, and it breaks down for some reason, they could be the ONLY person in that vehicle who knows what to do... after they take this workshop, of course!
Calling for help or AAA isn't always an option if they're out of cell service range or the place they're experiencing the emergency is dangerous or time sensitive (such as inclement weather) and they can't wait for help to arrive. Flagging down other passers-by isn't always going to save them either.
It's time to get EMPOWERED! This workshop will not only teach them HOW to handle common roadside emergencies, it will also give them the chance to actually PRACTICE the skill on different vehicles. Hearing about, reading about, and being told about how to do these things will not stick in their head in an emergency as will EXPERIENCING actually doing these things.
They will be learning and practicing:
- changing a tire
- jumstarting a vehicle's battery
- what to do if your car overheats while you're driving
- how to safely pull out of harms way and set flares during an emergency to prevent further problems with traffic or on a windy low-visibility road
We will have guest instructors at each car, time to rotate through practicing the skills, then another guest speaker will bring some great car necessities SWAG and teach them about what to do if they get into a car accident, as well as share the secrets to getting the lowest rate on car insurance that they can.
They will leave with the confidence and experience to know how to handle multiple roadside emergencies, how to protect themselves while roadside, a gift bag of tools for a vehicle, a checklist to keep in the glove compartment, and the skillz to do the drillz!
