EXCITE is a week-long summer professional development program placing middle and high school educators in business and industry settings to connect the classroom to the workplace. Educators will visit one or two businesses per day for the first four days of the program. The fifth day will include a debrief meeting with the program coordinator and peer educators to discuss lessons learned and ideas for classroom implementation. The goal is to equip teachers with answers to the "why do I need to know this" question and create relevancy within the standard curriculum based on real-life experiences provided by industry. Counselors can use the experience to connect students to careers and develop networks that expand work-based learning experiences for students.
The program will accept up to 30 educators. Participants will receive a stipend ($800 DPC, $500 HCPS) for successfully completing the week-long program and developing one lesson that integrates what they have learned from the employers.
Eligibility: Middle and high school teachers and school counselors are welcomed to apply. Participants must teach in Southcentral Virginia (GO Virginia Region 3) and be able to attend a 1 hour orientation at IALR in June 2024. Priority will be given to public school teachers and new program participants.
Program Dates: June 17-21, 2024 OR July 8-12, 2024. Apply as soon as possible!
At the end of this application, you will be asked to provide a narrative response and upload your resume or biographical sketch.
