Our Mission: The mission of the Organisation of African communities of Western Australia (OACWA) Mentor me Re-Connect Programme is to cater to our African Australian young persons who are aged between 10 and 30 years of age and are primarily based in Western Australia or regional areas. We provide mentors with the opportunity to interact with their mentees and establish a relationship that is culturally appropriate and could impact the lives of the young people. This programme also encourages graduates from the “Stop the Violence” project to take part in the “Let’s make it happen” mentorship programme at certain identified schools.
Our Mentees are expected to be honest and open, be eager to learn, have patience and be prepared to step out of their comfort zone, have a positive attitude, be prepared to absorb knowledge and have the ambition and desire to know what to do with this knowledge, take the initiative to ask for help/advice on tackling challenging assignments/projects and finally be considerate and respectful.
Our Mentoring Programme is to improve youth’s perspective toward education, academic performance and, develop social skills, confidence, rebuild self-esteem and, increase a sense of worth. In doing so we aim to reduce the crime and incarceration rate, instil hope, build character and encourage participation in service and community activities that will allow them to experience the blessing that comes from serving others.
