Case Response:
Eckhart Land has long struggled with providing its population with enough clean water to satisfy their daily needs. As of today, around 40% of Eckhart Land’s 100,000 citizens do not have reliable access to clean water. Throughout the years, several alternatives to their current system, including (i) a new pipe system, (ii) local distribution markets, and (iii) a new water treatment center have been explored, but Eckhart Land’s government has struggled with finding the most cost-efficient and equitable solution to this issue.
The government’s main goal is to increase water accessibility to 90% or above. In order to achieve this goal, the government is willing to eliminate funding from one of their three existing social programs: Healthcare, Education, or Unemployment relief. However, Eckhart Land’s government has also communicated to you that all three programs serve important social goals.
Eckhart Land’s government has hired you to help them accomplish their 90% water accessibility goal with an initiative that is both cost efficient and equitable. Your job is to recommend which water accessibility program Eckhart Land’s government should implement as well as outline the best way to fund it.
