GENERAL DETAILS
Production Workshop at Jopuka
After successful runs at the Australian Theatre for Young People and Monkey Baa, Jopuka Productions is excited to be bringing George Kemp’s script, ‘Shack’, to the Launch Pad this April as a vehicle for our first Production Workshop. This workshop series is supported by Create NSW and ATYP through the Generator Program.
What is a Production Workshop?
In a production workshop the actors will be directed by experienced Teaching Artist, Danielle Brame Whiting, to learn, develop and practice, skills in the rehearsal process and acting. Unlike a usual production where more emphasis is put on blocking, rehearsing and refining, here the young actors will have more room to be coached and develop their skills in these areas, whilst still striving for professional performances. All of this, resulting in four performances to the public.
What is ‘Shack’ by George Kemp About?
“We hear a sound — it’s a blizzard. High whistling wind. The wind picks up to fever pitch. It should feel like the shack is shaking from its force. All of a sudden nine schoolkids, dressed in colourful parkas, burst into the space in a flurry of snow and terror. It’s chaotic.”
In ‘Shack’ Kemp introduces us to nine young people on an excursion to the Antarctic who get separated from their adults and find shelter in an old shack. Residing inside is the diary of Antarctic explorer, Ernest Shackleton, providing information, experience, and sympathy. Outside the wild and scary noises of what may or may not be, the Wendigo.
