    Community Education Fellows Program

     

    Historical Background

    Elder Juanita M. Smalley, graduate of Bethune-Cookman University, and a champion in vocational education in Lake County, was committed to ensuring that everyone was prepared to find gainful employment and lead independent and productive lives. From community platforms to church pulpits, she advocated for and advanced the lives of so many Lake County families. She understood the foundation for economic self-sufficiency. Her journey began with pre-school and continued through post-secondary training. Elder Juanita M. Smalley’s family is committed to ensuring that her legacy continues.

     

    Mission Statement

    The Community Education Fellows (CEF) Program supports an education initiative that will ensure that Lake County’s families will have access to the best and brightest educators. A new and diverse cadre of leadership to the field of Early Childhood and Elementary Education will rise in Lake County.

     

    Vision Statement

    To fund the launch of a special initiative designed to mentor and engage a group of promising young people from the Lake County community with an interest in pursuing post-secondary education studies in Early Childhood and/or Elementary Education at Bethune-Cookman University.

                                     APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY APRIL 7, 2023


    Scholarship Eligibility:

    1. Applicant MUST have a sincere interest in pursuing post-secondary education studies in Early Childhood and/or Elementary Education at Bethune-Cookman University.

    2. Applicant must be a graduating senior from any public or private Lake County school.

    3. Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from each of the following:  a teacher, guidance counselor, and community service person who is familiar with the student’s community service.  

    4. Applicant must have provided service(s) in at least ONE community service program (e.g., Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Club, child care center, after-school tutoring program, etc.)

    5. Applicant’s grade point average must be 3.0 or above.

    6. Applicant must submit an official designation of his/her High School cumulative final average with a counselor’s signature.

  • Instructions:

    1. Completion of this application accurately for all items is important. If this form is
    incomplete, inaccurate or not signed, it will not be considered.  Please email or attach a photo to the application.

    2. Mail or email the completed application, along with all other requested items, so that they will be received by April 7, 2024.

    3. The application should be emailed to: CEFellowsProgram@gmail.com or mailed to Dr. Freda Coleman, Chairperson, Community Education Fellows Program Committee, Juanita M. Smalley Center for Wholeness and Wellness, Inc., 1610 Griffin Road, Leesburg, Florida 34748.

    4. A $1,000.00 Scholarship will be awarded to the awardee when proof of registration has been emailed or mailed at the above address.        

    5. Juanita M. Smalley Center for Wholeness and Wellness, Inc., Community Education Fellows Program Committee requires an attached typed statement describing goals and other relevant information.
