Dr. Bill Creasy invites you to join him on his Patmos and Ephesus Revelation Seminar Trip.
Cave of Apocalypse Saint Loannis
No other book in the Bible seems so cryptic as Revelation, no other book so extravagant in its symbolism and wild visions, and no other book so given to misreading and misinterpretation. Although written nearly 2,000 years ago, Revelation still grips our imagination with its drama, nightmare visions, stunning colors, full-tilt sound, and over-the-top imagery. Most who read Revelation come away baffled and bewildered, scratching their heads. What are we to make of this puzzling work?
Join Dr. C. and your fellow Logos students for this once-in-a-lifetime, 3-day seminar on the island of Patmos, followed by in-depth visits to each of the Seven Churches of Revelation. This is emphatically a teaching tour, a chance to come to grips with one of the most mysterious, baffling, and misunderstood books in the Bible.
DAY 1: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27: LOS ANGELES/ ISTANBUL
We depart Los Angeles International Airport on our flights to Istanbul, Turkey.
DAY 2: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28: ISTANBUL
Arriving in Istanbul, we check into our hotel. This evening we enjoy our dinner in the town of Istanbul. Overnight in Istanbul. (D)
DAY 3: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29: ISTANBUL/ KUSADASI (EPHESUS)
First thing in the morning we depart Istanbul and make a 5-hour transit by coach to the stunning archaeological remains of Ephesus (Kusadasi). The largest and most complete archaeological site in Turkey—and one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the world—Paul spent two years here, having “discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus” (Acts 19:9), at the end of which he said, “all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord” (Acts 19:10).
After checking into our hotel this afternoon, we visit the great theater of Ephesus, where a riot broke out and Paul is nearly killed. Next, we visit the Basilica of St. John, where it is said that John is buried. The Apostle John served as leader of the church in Ephesus, and it is the first of the seven churches that the Lord addresses in Revelation. Our final visit is to Mary’s house. Recall, too, that from the cross Jesus entrusted his mother Mary to John’s care, and tradition holds that Mary accompanied John to Ephesus where she lived her final days in a small stone house on Mount Koressos, overlooking the site of Ephesus. Dinner and overnight at our hotel. (B, D)
DAY 4: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30: KUSADASI (EPHESUS)/ PATMOS, GREECE: SEMINAR
Ephesus is also the site of St. Paul’s most successful missionary journey, AD 54-57, during which time “all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord” (Acts 19:10). We will spend the morning today exploring Ephesus together.
In the afternoon we depart Ephesus and travel five hours by ferry boat (just like the Apostle John did!) to the island of Patmos. Upon arrival we will check into our beachfront hotel, freshen up, and visit the Cave of the Apocalypse, the place where John is said to have written the book of Revelation, as well as visit the Monastery of St. John the Theologian. The island of Patmos is small, only 13 sq. mi., with a population of fewer than 3,000. Dinner tonight is at our hotel. (B, D)
DAY 5: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1: PATMOS: SEMINAR
This morning we begin our seminar with Dr. C. on the book of Revelation with an overview of the book, its literary genre, and its proper historical context. We’ll then move on to a close examination of its opening and the seven letters to the seven churches. Dr. C. will introduce the topics, present them in detail, and there will be time for lively discussion, questions, and answers.
We’ll finish the seminar session in time for lunch, and then we’ll have free time in the afternoon to meet in small groups for discussion, to explore the island on our own, go for a swim in the Aegean, or just plain relax, thinking perhaps about our Apostle John and his time on this island. Dinner is on our own tonight, either at the hotel or at one of the local restaurants. (B, L)
DAY 6: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2: PATMOS: SEMINAR
This morning we meet again and continue our study of Revelation, this time Dr. C. will examine in-depth John’s vision, the Seven Seals, and the Seven Trumpets. We will then open up the session for discussion, questions, and answers. After lunch we will resume our seminar and Dr. C. will focus on the Woman and the Dragon, the Two Beasts, the Lamb and His Companion and the Seven
Bowls. Again, expect lively discussion! Dinner is on our own at the hotel or at a local restaurant. (B, L)
DAY 7: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3: PATMOS, GREECE/ KUSADASI (EPHESUS), TURKEY
This morning we bring our seminar to a close as Dr. C. examines the Whore of Babylon, the Battle of Armageddon, the Millennial Kingdom, and the New Heaven and New Earth. Dr. C. will offer his concluding thoughts on Revelation, and you will have an opportunity to express your concluding thoughts, as well. This afternoon we check out of our hotel and travel by boat back to Ephesus, checking into our hotel in time for dinner. (B, D)
DAY 8: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4: KUSADASI (EPHESUS): LAODICEA/ PHILADELPHIA/ SARDIS/ IZMIR
Today we leave Ephesus early and visit three of the seven churches of Revelation: Laodicea, Philadelphia and Sardis. Then we will drive to Izmir for dinner & overnight. (B, D)
DAY 9: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5: IZMIR/ SMYRNA/ THYATIRA/ PERGAMUM/ CANAKKALE
Today we leave Izmir early and visit the final three of the seven churches of Revelation: Smyrna, Pergamum, and Thyatira. At the end of the tour, we will drive to Canakkale for dinner & overnight. (B, D)
DAY 10: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6: CANAKKALE/ ISTANBUL
Today we depart Canakkale and drive back to Istanbul, check into our hotel and spend the remainder of the day visiting Hagia Sophia, cruising the Bosphorus, and having our farewell dinner at one of Dr. C.’s favorite Turkish restaurants, the Blue Angel. (B, D)
DAY 11: MONDAY, OCTOBER 7: ISTANBUL/ USA
After breakfast, we depart for the airport and board our flights home, cherishing our memories of Time in Greece and Turkey, the sites we have seen that make Scripture come alive. (B)
