About the Course:
This module introduces participants to the fundamentals of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and its application to wood structures. The session begins with an overview of key design standards, including NBCC (Part 4 – Structural Design), CSA O86 (Engineering Design in Wood), and references to CSA A23.3 (Design of Concrete Structures) and CSA S16 (Design of Steel Structures) for comparative understanding.
The focus then shifts to the practical design of a small wood-framed building. Topics include:
- Understanding structural load paths in wood buildings
- Development of wood framing plans and stud wall systems
- Design of floor joists, beams, and lintels
- Analysis and detailing of load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls
