California Laws to Keep Children Safe In and Around Cars
According to California law, children under age 8 must be buckled into a car seat or booster in the back seat.
A booster seat raises and positions a child so the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt fits properly.
Children age 8 or older, who are 4'9" or taller may use the vehicle seat belt only if the seat belt fits properly with the lap belt low on the hips, touching the upper thighs and the shoulder belt crosses the center of the chest. If children are not tall enough for a proper belt fit, they must ride in a booster or car seat.
To ride safely, most children need a booster seat until age 10-12.
It is also important to know, according to California law, that children under 2 years old must be rear facing unless they weigh 40 pounds or more, or are 40 inches tall or more.
Do not be in a rush to face your child forward.
For best protection, children should ride rear facing to the highest weight or height allowed by the car seat manufacturer.
NEVER leave a child alone in a car!
It is against California law to leave a child who is 6 years of age or younger alone in the car without the supervision of a person at least 12 years old.
How to Use a Booster Seat
Depending on your child's height and weight provided during registration, you will receive either a high-back or low-back booster seat. Both offer increased safety to your child vs. riding in a seat belt alone for children under 4'9", and both have passed all federal motor safety vehicle codes and rigorous crash testing.
