Please complete the following application if you are interested in becoming a peer mentor for our JOMC 100 First Year Experience class. This course is taught by the academic advisors in the CoJMC. All incoming CoJMC first-year students are required to take JOMC 100. The course covers everything from helping students discover their purpose for pursing higher education, to taking ownership of their education while maintaining engagement, building relationships and well-being.

As a peer mentor, you will assist first-year CoJMC students with acclimating to college through a variety of activities. You must be willing to share your experiences, both challenges and accomplishments, as a first-year UNL student. You will provide guidance and one-on-one support with each of your mentees throughout their first semester. Be available for in-class and out-of-classroom questions from your mentees. Demonstrate positive and mature behavior on campus as a role model for your mentees and a representative of UNL and the CoJMC.
In-class expectations:
- Attend every JOMC 100 class and be prepared to work with your mentees
- Lead a small group of 8-10 mentees in class through discussion and activities
- Each mentor will be responsible for creating a mini presentation/activity

Out-of-class expectations:
- Hold at least one hour of "office hours" each week at a location of your choosing on campus. It is expected that you will notify your mentees where you will be and when.
- Regularly communicate with your group of mentees
- Attend mentor staff meetings
- Plan and implement an out of classroom activity with your group of mentees during the semester
Qualifications:
- Must be declared a CoJMC major
- Must be a sophomore, junior or senior in the 2024-2025 academic year
- Must be in good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA), GPA of 2.5 preferred
- Would be preferable if you have taken JOMC 100, but not required
- Must be prepared to fully commit to online training workshops in August 2024
Each JOMC 100 class will have approximately 30 students with 3 peer mentors.
