SLSA Meritorious Awards

SLSA Meritorious Awards are awarded to affiliated clubs and/or their members and/or the public for outstanding deeds of bravery performed during lifesaving operations of SLSA (during and outside of designated patrol hours).

It is important to note that SLSA Meritorious Awards aim to recognise excellence in lifesaving and service delievery, measured against industry best practice and operating procedures. It is not to encourage unnecessary risk, neglect safety considerations or standard Operating Procedures. 

Supporting Documentation

The SLSA Meritorious Award nomination form should be the primary source of information. Nomination forms for other awards will not be accepted as supporting documentation.

The following documentation should be provided with the nomination:

• Incident Report Log
• Supporting statements (eg. Police, Ambulance, Public Witness statements)
• Information or reports of rescues from media agencies
• Copy of the patrol log (where applicable)

Provide an overview of the incident, describing what happened and any details that will assist with consideration of the application:

When responding to this section consider the following:

• Were the skills used correctly and appropriately as per SOP’s?
• Did the rescue / incident require advanced technical skills?
• Was the equipment chosen best for the conditions and skill level of the personnel?
• Was there optimal use of skills within the available personnel?

When responding to this section consider the following:

• Were standard operating procedures followed?
• Was the safety of the rescuers involved appropriately assessed?
• Was there appropriate leadership, chain of command, good scene management, paperwork completed, follow-ups etc.?
• Was the equipment utilised appropriately?

When responding to this section consider the following:

• Was the incident around rocks, cliffs, or other precarious situations?
• What was the size of the surf, wind, visibility, temperature, time and other environmental conditzions at land or sea?

Would the outcome have been the same if he rescuers hadn't intervened?

This is the last opportunity to provide any information in relation to the incident.
