Artists’ Invitation & Expression of Interest
  • Image field 19
  • The Drawing Intensive is a three-day program, facilitated by Felicity Gordon, for eight artists to investigate how they interpret the world through processes of mark making and image construction.  This masterclass program is based on a similar immersive program offered by the New Your Studio School.  Many artists who have completed the program have found it to be beneficial in developing practical skills and fostering critical thinking while gaining a deeper understanding of the way images are constructed.

This kind of intensive is not widely offered in Australia.  The Adelaide Central Art School is the only public institution offering intensives facilitated by an artist/teacher who completed the NYSS program.

The program focuses on the human figure as a vehicle for image making.

The intensive immersive program will invite artists to work on a large scale, while experimenting with new techniques and methods they may not have used previously.   This process will be beneficial to artists who use drawing as their primary medium and also those who work in sculptural mediums.  This program is aimed at professional Banyule artists to develop and extend their practices.

    The Program aims to:

    ·       Encourage artists to break away from individual patterns of creating within a supportive environment.

    ·       Encourage artists to take risks and experiment in constructing images, mark making and expression.

    ·       Assist artists to deepen their understanding of their own artistic practice.

    ·       Engage with artists to face problems they may be avoiding with their usual drawing methods.

    ·       Foster the physical experience of artmaking on a large scale.

    ·       Present a group exhibition which will be held just after the completion of the three day immersive.

    ·       Assist artists to present their work and participate in group critiques and discussions.

    ·       To provide a rare opportunity for other artists and the public to see how different artists respond to the same series of activities.

    ·       Promote the exhibition through National arts publications and other media.

The program will consist of 6 hours of life drawing every day presented in morning and afternoon sessions.  Different topics will be introduced as artists work through the learning program.

At the end of each day there will be a 30 minute group critique and discussion about the day’s work.  Artists will be invited to present their work and offer thoughts about the process they navigated.  Critiques are a powerful way for artists to see their work through the eyes of other artists and learn of others creative processes.  Critique session will be held in a supportive, safe and positive space.

Artists will be encouraged to record their reflections in a journal.  The journal could consist of text or imagery.
