Student Experiential Learning Funding Application Logo
  • Winter 2026 Student Experiential Learning Application

  • Experiential learning funds support active learning experience and are intended to help students be equipped to make outside-of-class learning experiences more impactful and worthwhile.

Undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty projects that include students are eligible to apply for this funding. A strong application will have a clear budget, reasonable timeline, and well-stated outcomes. When considering outcomes in writing your proposal, do your best to answer the following questions:

    • How will this project/experience affect your trajectory as an artist and/or educator?
    • How does this project/experience help you accomplish things not possible within the scope of a classroom?
    • Why is it important to complete this project/experience now? What makes it timely?
    • How will funding affect the completion of this project/experience?
    • How will you benefit from direct faculty mentorship?

Things to keep in mind while completing this application:

    • Student applicants must be currently enrolled majors in the Department of Art. This includes BA, BFA, and MFA students in Art, and BA and MA students in Art Education. Art and Art Education minors are not eligible.

    • Up to 20% of funding may be used for expendable materials (paper, paint, canvases, clay, wood, etc.)

    • Funding cannot be used for:
      • non-expendable equipment purchases such as cameras, software, paintbrushes, or tools
      • the travel or accommodation expenses of applicants' family members (spouse, children, etc.)
      • pay/wages or for those involved in submitting the application
      • per diem expenses (such as meals or groceries)

    • Some alternative but less-obvious uses of funding beyond the above restrictions include:
      • Conference and workshop fees
      • Equipment rental
      • Research costs (books, database access)
      • Subcontractor/freelancer fees for documentation, video editing, one-on-one trainings, framing, design, coding, etc.
      • Location-based fees (venues, facilities, and sites)
      • Printing and/or publication fees

If you have any questions about what Experiential Learning funds can be used for, please email maddison_colvin@byu.edu.

Students submitting proposals must coordinate with and have the support of a full-time faculty mentor. Do not submit a proposal unless you have the verbal and/or written support of your faculty mentor. This faculty member should have enough familiarity with you and your proposed project to provide additional context during the application review process.

The deadline to submit proposals for Winter is January 31, 2026 at 11:59PM

NOTE: Applications cannot be saved and completed later. Scroll down to see the information you need to submit before you begin.
