Mission: To follow the job responsibilities to the highest degree of ethics and integrity to achieve the KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc. mission of providing professionally trained guide, service and facility dogs for people in need of a canine partner to enhance their independence, to fully function in society and/or to enrich their professional career responsibilities with the ongoing support of our trainers to ensure proficient working partnerships.
Supervision: Reports to the CEO who Reports to the Board of Directors
Summer interns will be expected to work in each area of focus at KSDS to understand all aspects of the organization and how the organization operates.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Answer the phone and either take messages or direct calls to appropriate staff.
- Compile and organize files and materials.
- Assist in the creation of marketing materials to utilize on social media and to promote KSDS.
- Expand the target audience of KSDS through community relations, engagements, and events.
Canine Housing Unit Responsibilities:
- Maintain clean and safe environment in Canine Housing Unit (CHU) for both dogs and people.
- Monitor all health care, exercise, grooming, basic obedience, kennel obedience, crate training, special circumstances and diet alterations for the dogs.
- Learn dog care, understand dog handling skills and various canine behaviors.
- Prepare inventory for and coordinate CHU maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Understand the concept of providing quality services to KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc’s clientele and their families including the importance of teamwork.
Maintenance Responsibilities:
- Prepare inventory for and coordinate maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Complete weekly/monthly walk throughs to identify areas that need to be addressed.
- Upkeep of the facilities which could include, but is not limited to: pulling weeds, raking rocks, planting flowers, mowing, etc.
Specific Job Responsibilities:
- This position is a part-time position.
- Work location is the KSDS Assistance Dogs campus – 120 W 7th St. Washington, KS 66968.
- The time commitment is from 8AM to 5PM Monday through Friday.
- Intern will complete 400 hours over 10 weeks of the summer.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent degree.
- Knowledge of animal husbandry.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
Essential Physical Demands:
- Able to lift at least 50 pounds.
- Able to drive during the day and night.Able to handle large dogs (60 to 90 pounds)
- Able to walk long distances.
- Requires bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, walking, crawling, and working in extreme weather conditions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Knowledge of assistance dog laws, rights, access rights and related information
- Applicable knowledge of canine behavior, training techniques, and disabilities
- Assist with public tours, demonstrations, and other KSDS
- Assistance Dogs, Inc. events.
- Communication, organization, and record-keeping skills.
- Proficient computer and social media skills.
