Developed by respected Māori health leaders and based on evidence, they are intended for busy health professionals to do online, at their own pace. Over 17,000 New Zealanders have completed these courses in the last two years.
The content is delivered over 8 modules and consists of a variety of reading & listening material. It typically takes around 12.5 hours to complete. 5 CPE points are available per course, once you have completed the module quizzes.
The two courses are:
Foundations in Cultural Competency
This has a focus on supporting health workers in Aotearoa, New Zealand to understand what Cultural Competency means from a health perspective. The content includes the definition and importance of Cultural Competency, personal biases & diverse perspectives, building multi-cultural relations, establishing trust & rapport and creating an inclusive work/clinic environment.
Foundations course on Healthcare & the Treaty of Waitangi
This explores the partnership between the Crown and Māori and how their combined efforts can improve Māori health equity. The content includes historical context to Te Tiriti o Waitangi - the Treaty of Waitangi & its application to healthcare policies & legislation. It explores health inequities, the importance of patient and whānau engagement, and building a culturally responsive health system.
Why are these courses important?
As healthcare workers, Naturopaths & Medical Herbalists have a responsibility to help address serious and persistent health inequities affecting Māori and Pasifika populations in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
You will gain greater insights and improved awareness into why it is important for our kiritaki Māori (Māori clients) to feel safe to share their language, customs, and way of life without bias, which is known to lead to better health outcomes, more appropriate care, and equity as Te Tiriti o Waitangi partners.
