Applications that are not filled out with time and care may not be considered. Filling out an application does not make you a volunteer, you must complete training. Please note that we do not recommend volunteering to anyone with severe allergies to cat hair, dog hair, or dust as these allergens are prominent at the shelter. Peanut Butter and cleaners containing Bleach are used at the shelter as well.

SFAHS is an open admission shelter that never euthanizes for length of stay, space or breed. Euthanasia is present at the shelter for animals who are suffering mentally or physically, animals that have been declared vicious by the city or who are not safe to be in the public, and for those requested from the public.
Do you understand that under certain circumstances, we may have to euthanize an animal at the shelter?

Volunteer Policies and Agreement

It is important that volunteer attendance is consistent and meets the minimum time commitment of 3 hours per month, Should you find the nature of this volunteer work is not what you expected, or, that you can’t achieve the minimum hours for any other personal reason – you need to inform the Programs Director so your records are updated accordingly. This may require you to attend all training AGAIN should you want to volunteer in the future. These policies are in place to ensure volunteers are confidently trained – thus lessening the chances of injury.

An up-to-date TETANUS vaccine is recommended, in the event that you are bitten or scratched. TETANUS vaccines need to be updated every 10 years. It may be obtained by your physician at your own expense.

As a volunteer for the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, you will be working with animals with unknown and unpredictable characteristics and dispositions, and will be subjecting yourself to various work conditions. You hereby assume the risk of any injury that may result from your volunteer services at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. There are no workman’s comp or disability benefits for injured volunteers. BY SIGNING THIS APPLICATION: You, intending to be legally bound for yourself, heirs, executors, and administrators, release the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, its officers, directors and staff from any and all rights and claims for damages you may have arising out of any injuries or illnesses suffered by yourself or your pet’s incidental to your volunteer services.

All volunteers are expected to maintain strict confidentiality regarding matters related to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society (SFAHS). This includes not speaking with any media outlets, other rescue organizations, or animal care facilities, and refraining from posting on social media on behalf of SFAHS without prior approval from the Executive Director. Any breach of confidentiality is considered a serious violation of SFAHS policy and may result in immediate termination from the Volunteer Program.

**The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society reserves the right to decline any volunteer application for any reason. This may include, but is not limited to any area where there is a conflict of interest or incomplete application. Due to liability issues, The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society does not have a program for court ordered or diversion program community service.

Completing this application does not make you a SFAHS volunteer. You will go through the following process:
1. Application submitted. Please allow 3-5 business days to process.
2. If application is approved, you will be contacted to schedule your orientation and training sessions.
3. After the training sessions are complete, you will be able to volunteer, but additional training is encouraged.
