Preliminary Round via YouTube video is February 1, 2024, to March 24, 2024.
Preliminary judging results will be posted online Sunday, March 31, 2024.
Final Round for each category will be in-person on Sunday, April 7th, 2024 at Diablo Valley College, Music Building, Room M-101.
A scholarship will be award to the 1st place winner of each division.
Overall best violin or viola performance will be awarded the DVC Philharmonic Award.
Overall best cello or bass performance will be awarded the Ariel Witbeck Award.
DVC Philharmonic and Ariel Witbeck Award winners will be offered a performance with the DVC Philharmonic or HNU Orchestra.

Primary Violin Grade 4 and under
Elementary Violin Grades 5 and 6
Intermediate Violin Grades 7 and 8
Junior Violin Grade 9 and 10
Senior Violin Grades 11 and 12
Viola: Grade 12 and under
Cello:
Elementary Cello Grade 6 and under
Intermediate Cello Grades 7 to 9
Senior Cello Grades 10 to 12
Bass: Grade 12 and under
Vamos: Grade 12 and under (performing music by Grace Vamos)
Chamber Music: Grade 12 and under (ensembles of 2 or more string students)
RULES
The DVC/HNU Young Artist String Competition is open to violin, viola, cello, and bass students grade 12 and under.
A past first place winner may not compete in the same division in any following year. A past year’s first place winner may, however, compete in a more advanced division in a following year.
Repertoire will consist of one work: one movement from a larger work or a single movement work. Work must be performed from memory.
For the preliminary round, applicants must make a video recording of themselves playing their repertoire in a single take without edits. Applicant must be visible for the entire performance. Applicant must post their video on YouTube (unlisted recommended) and provide its link in the application below.
A separate application and entrance fee is required for each division entered by a student.
Judges’ decisions are final.
