On November 8, 2022, voters in McCurtain County approved a 2% lodging tax to pay for a new McCurtain Memorial Hospital. Shortly after the vote was passed, the incorporators of the town of Hochatown filed a lawsuit that challenged the collection of that tax. In their lawsuit, they allege that the McCurtain County Board of County Commissioners did not follow the law by publishing the ballot in a local newspaper for 4 consecutive weeks, along with other procedural errors. That case is now sitting with the Oklahoma Supreme Court for their decision on whether the passage of the tax is legal and can be collected.
