Neuroscience Scholars Program: Mentor Application
Please complete the form below to apply for a position as a summer NSP mentor
What is Neuroscience Scholars Program?
The Neuroscience Scholars Program (NSP) promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in neuroscience research by matching the potential of students underrepresented in biomedical research (URBR) with mentors in research laboratories in the Department of Neurobiology at UMB. In addition to pursuing a hypothesis-driven, collaborative project with their mentor, scholars will engage in department-wide events via seminars and program socials. The NSP experience will culminate in the NSP symposium at the end of the summer experience, where scholars will present their research project to the Department of Neurobiology.
Who can be a NSP mentor?
Scientists in the Department of Neurobiology who have a strong desire to increase diversity in STEM research via a summer mentorship program, and are dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment in lab. Chosen mentors will be matched with recent high school graduates (18+ years old) or current undergraduate students with ties to Baltimore. Graduate student applicants should pass their qualifying exam prior to applying and, along with post-doctoral fellows, must receive approval from their PI to host the scholar in the lab and devote the time required to mentoring. Mentor applications are reviewed based on merit of the scientific project proposed for the NSP Scholar. Selected NSP mentors will receive a $500 NSP Mentor Award at the end of the summer.
When will NSP take place?
Scholars will be hosted by their labs over an 5 week (25 hrs/wk, 5 hrs/day) period.
