Elizabeth Inkster was a long-time resident of Haida Gwaii who was an accomplished singer/songwriter and produced her own cd. She was one of the founding members of the Edge of the World Music Festival and served as President of the former Queen Charlotte Arts Council (now known as the Haida Gwaii Arts Council) for many years. Her greatest joy was being involved in, contributing to, and helping others to succeed in anything musical on these islands. Elizabeth was also an excellent and talented weaver and in earlier years, had made her living weaving professionally.

Purpose of the Award

The Elizabeth Inkster Memorial Award has been created to encourage and support those in our community who wish to develop their skills in music and/or any other art disciplines. Age is no limitation. Students, adults and seniors are all eligible. The award will consider both financial need and excellence, a melding of bursary and scholarship. Your desired course can be for something as simple as attendance at any arts-related camp or courses to advanced instruction at a fine arts institute. Applications can also be submitted to fund the recruitment of a highly skilled instructor to come to Haida Gwaii to conduct a course.

The Award Fund

The fund was started in 2013 through sales of Elizabeth’s cd and her weavings, donations from Elizabeth’s family in Ontario, and local friends and family. The award will be in the amount of a maximum of $1000 per year. If two applicants are deemed equal or if the full amount is not needed by one, it could be split into two awards. Elizabeth's family members manage the fund.

Issuing the Award

Applications are accepted from January 1st to April 30th of each year. Announcement of recipient will be made no later than May 31st for courses starting in the summer or fall. If no award is allocated by the end of May, applications will be accepted from June 1st to August 31st for courses starting in the fall. Application for courses starting in January of the following year can be made as late as November 30th.

The award will be issued in two halves. The first bursary amount will be issued upon the granted application; the second will be upon successful course completion, with documented support.

Criteria

Applicants must be residents of Haida Gwaii for at least one year with proof of residence for recent arrivals.

A variety of criteria will be considered, including:

-       Demonstrated dedication to craft

-       Record of experience and or achievement

-       Letters of recommendation

-       Intention to utilize your new learned skills for the betterment of the community

-       Indication that your course is part of your planned career path

-       Financial need

For someone applying to bring an instructor to the islands, you should outline how it would benefit the community and more specifically, whether you have a plan subsequent to the course to build on the interest it generated.
