The Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus is proud to present the 2nd Annual Black Maternal Health Week at the Capitol, April 15 - April 17, 2024.
As a partner in the fight to end the Black Maternal Health Crisis, we are excited to invite you to become a sponsor for our jam-packed line up of events. The health of mothers reflects the overall health of our society, and the state of maternal health in PA is dire. As such, the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus is determined to make the entire Commonwealth aware of this important week and the issues that must be addressed through strategic policy efforts. The work of the PBMHC could not be accomplished without the collective support of our community partners, stakeholders, legislators, and advocates like YOU.
About the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus (PBMHC)
The PBMHC was established in 2023 by State Representatives Morgan B. Cephas, Gina H. Curry, and La’Tasha D. Mayes who now serve as caucus co-chairs. The PBMHC is a coalition of legislators, policy stakeholders, maternal health providers, and advocates committed to ending the Black Maternal Health crisis in the Commonwealth. Through coordinated policy and community engagement working groups, the PBMHC is determined to introduce and pass a comprehensive package of legislation, known as the PA MOMNIBUS, to boldly address the disturbing trends of Black maternal mortality and morbidity.
About Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW)
Black Maternal Health Week takes place annually during National Minority Health Month, from April 11 to 17. Founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), the objective of BMHW is to shine a spotlight on the critical need to address and reverse the alarming racial disparities in maternal mortality and morbidity. The 2024 BMHW theme is “Our Bodies Still Belong to Us” to highlight the strength, power and resilience, and unassailable right for Black women to birth freely, safely, and joyfully.
Black Maternal Health Week at the Capitol
2024 will be the second year, but first as an official state caucus, that PA legislators, stakeholders, and community members gather in the Harrisburg Capitol to recognize Black Maternal Health Week. Each day of BMHW at the Capitol has been thoughtfully curated to address the unique needs and challenges of birthing in our Commonwealth. Black Maternal Health Week Policy Day, on April 16th, will include a breakfast briefing, press conference, and MOMNIBUS briefing. On Wednesday, April 17th, the PBMHC will be hosting a special, hybrid brunch and learn session titled “BMH in your Neighborhood” hosted by the PBMHC Co-Chairs.
