Would you like to be part of The SpongeBob Musical Technical Crew and Creative Team working alongside our professional creative and production team? Well now is your chance.
This summer, Watford Palace Theatre are producing the youth edition of The SpongeBob Musical. We are looking for enthusiastic people aged 16-25 interested in developing their skills and experience to join us. You will have to opportunity to work closely with the creative and technical professionals, and to be taught and mentored by them.
There are a variety of different roles available:
Assistant Stage Manager: Working with a professional Stage Manager you will help source the props required for the show. This may include making some of them from scratch. Assisting the Stage Manager to set up the props and furniture prior to the start of the show. During the show you will work backstage to ensure everything runs smoothly making sure the props are in the right place and assisting with scene changes on stage as applicable.
Lighting Technician: Assist the in-house team to rig and focus the lights for the show. Assisting the in-house Technicians with the pre-show checks ensuring everything is working prior to the start of the show. You will get an opportunity to operate the lights for the show alongside the in-house staff and spend some time shadowing the Lighting Designer.
Sound Technician: Assist the in-house team to rig the speakers for the sound. Assisting with the pre-show checks ensuring everything is working prior to the start of the show. Shadow the Sound No. 2 during the shwo to gain experience of how a musical is mixed. Alongside working with the in-house staff, you will also spend some time shadowing the Sound Designer.
Sound No. 2: A Sound No. 2 is the person who helps the actors put on their microphones for the show. Prior to the show you will assist with the pre-show checks. Working alongside the in-house Technician you will assist with troubleshooting any issue that arise with the mics during the show.
Stage Crew: Working alongside the in-house Technician you will help put the scenery up prior to the start of the show. During the show you will assist with any changes as required.
Wardrobe Assistant: Working alongside the Head of Wardrobe you will assist with sourcing the costumes for the show. The role may include some alterations on the costumes depending on experience. During the show assist with quick changes.
Assistant Choreographer: Working alongside the show's choreographer, you will assist during physical warm-ups and choreography rehearsals, recieve mentoring and gain insights into planning and teaching dance routines and movement within the show. During shows, you will take notes.
Assistant Designer: Working alongside the production's designer of set and costumes, you will shadow the design process, recieve mentoring, and assist with practical tasks required to get the show's set, costume and other visual elements ready for production week and opening night.
Assistant Director: Working alongside the show's director, the acting company, and other members of the creative team, you will assist with rehearsals and observe and contribute to the creative process of directing the show, gaining insights into decision making and the process of taking a show from rehearsals and planning into techincal rehearsals and performances. During shows, you will take notes and/or support the acting company backstage as required.
Assistant Musical Director: Working alongside the show's musical director, you will assist with rehearsals, warm-ups and observe contribute to the creative process of preparing the company's vocal performance, recieve mentoring and gain insights into planning and teaching of the show's music. During shows, you will take notes as required.
Assistant Producer: Working alongside the show's Producer, you will learn about the production's budget, planning and other areas involved in Producing a show, and assist with tasks to ensure its smooth running. You will also have opportunity to attend key rehearsals and performances and report back to the Producing team if/where required.
If you have never worked backstage before, training will be given during the rehearsal period. All successful candidates will be invited to come in for an induction day and to meet the team.
The Technical and Dress rehearsals take place from 30th July to 1st August with performances 2nd - 4th August. Please note: if you are given a show role you will need to be available for all the dates which includes daytime and evenings. For creative team and stage management roles, a reasonable level of availability will also be required during rehearsals which are mostly Monday and Thursday evenings during June and July.
Within this application you will need to include a short CV and either a statement of no more than 250 words or a short video of no more than 90 seconds briefly explaining which role(s) you would like to be considered for and why.
Interviews will be taking place on Tuesday 19th March and Wednesday 20th March 2024 in the late afternoon/early evening.
Please note there will be a £75 Production Fee if you are offered a role in the Technical Crew & Creative Team. This fee goes towards some of the costs of production and providing your placement opportunity. We can offer a limited number of bursaries to young people from low-income households or for whom finances would be a barrier to taking part.
