• Design Thinking Fellow Application

Thank you for your interest in the Design Thinking Fellows program! This form will serve as your application to the program. We'll be asking for some demographic information and a brief narrative answers explaining how this program might benefit your students. This application form will close at 11:59PM on March 1st. Accepted fellows will be notified by March 5th.
  • The Design Thinking Fellows program is an NSF-funded fellowship for NOVA faculty to integrate design thinking into their instruction. Design thinking is a variant of the engineering design process that prioritizes developing an emphathetic understanding of users experiencing a problem through collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.

As a Design Thinking Fellow, you'll be asked to commit to completing the following activities:

Learn Design Thinking in the Spring Semester:

    - Attend two in-person design thinking workshops at the Fab Lab on the Manassas campus on Monday, 3/11 and 4/2 from 9AM - 3PM.

    - Observe a Fab Lab workshop in design thinking on 4/12 at 1 - 3PM.

Practice Teaching in the Summer Semester:

    - Co-teach a design thinking workshop to NOVA students with other faculty on May 23rd from 1 - 3PM.

    - Provide weekly mentoring support to NOVA students in the Fab Lab's design incubator as they develop & prototype a new product on May 31st, June 7th, and June 14th.

A total stipend of $3,000 will be provided for completing the above activities. Stipends will be paid via a supplemental work assignment (SWA). Both adjuncts and full-time faculty are elligible for this fellowship.

Please read this consent agreement carefully before you decide to participate in the study.
  • Purpose of the research study: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Makers By Design Design Thinking Fellowship.

What you will do in the study: For this study, you will complete a survey evaluation of the PL. We will also videotape PLworkshops and Summer Camps, and collect reflections and lesson plans created during the PL. You may be asked to participate in audiotaped interviews about your experience in the PL. You can skip any survey or interview question that makes you uncomfortable and stop any interview/survey at any time.

Time required: Completion of data collection activities will require about 45 minutes of your time. Completion of evaluation survey will take approximately 15 minutes. If you are selected for an interview, each will last approximately 30 minutes. Observations will last the entirety of the PL and summer camp and will require no time on your part.

Risks: There are no anticipated risks in this study. Researchers will keep all data secure and will strip it of identifying information before analysis.

Benefits: There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this research study. The main goal of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the MBD PL in supporting teacher integration of fabrication technologies into instruction.

Confidentiality: The information that you give in the study will be handled confidentially.  Your information will be assigned a code number.  The list connecting your name to this code will be kept in a locked file.  When the study is completed and the data have been analyzed, this list will be destroyed.  Your name will not be used in any report. Audiotapes and videotapes will be destroyed after all data are analyzed.

Voluntary participation: Your participation in the study is completely voluntary.  A decision not to participate in data collection will have no effect on employment or your status in the PL program.

Right to withdraw from the study: You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.  If you withdraw from the study, any audiotapes or videotapes will be destroyed.

How to withdraw from the study: If you want to withdraw from the study please tell the researcher.  There is no penalty for withdrawing.  If you would like to withdraw after your materials have been submitted, please contact Josh Labrie (jlabrie@nvcc.edu).  Payment will be prorated based on the time at which you withdrew.

Payment: You will receive a total of $3,000 for participating in the study as follows: $1000 for completion of the spring design thinking training and $2000 for providing mentoring support and teaching a design thinking workshop at the Fab Lab's design incubator.

Using data beyond this study: The data you provide in this study will be retained in a secure manner by the researcher for 5 years and then destroyed.
