ABOUT THE PROCESS
This Expression of Interest (EOI) signals your interest in joining our referee cohort.
Once you've submitted your EOI, you'll be added to our database. When we're gearing up for our next apprentice school, we'll reach out via email to invite you to a group interview.
Don't worry if you don't hear from us immediately after submitting your EOI. We only reach out when we're about to kick off our next intake, which typically aligns with each school Term. For instance, if you submit your EOI midway through Term 1 and our current school is already in session, expect to hear from us around Term 2.
It's important to note that completing the EOI doesn't guarantee you a spot in the upcoming course.
Should you be unable to make it to the group interview or attend the scheduled training sessions, we regret to inform you that we won't be able to move progress your EOI at this point in time.
COST
The cost of the course is $75 (GST inclusive) which includes all training material, RefBook registration, a whistle/breakaway lanyard and a green shirt.
EXPECTATIONS AND DATES
Attendance at our classroom and on-court sessions is mandatory. Regrettably, we are unable to provide make-up sessions, so it's imperative that you can commit to attending all sessions before you sign up. While the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) may classify refereeing as a hobby, we approach it with the same level of professionalism as a job. Therefore, participation in domestic/representative training or other extra curricular activities cannot be considered a valid excuse for missing our sessions.
Term 2 Apprentice school dates – you will need to bring your own device to all sessions to complete online components during the session
Group interview Monday 29 April 2024 (invites sent prior with interview times)
- Week 1 Thursday 2 May 5:30pm-9pm
- Week 2 Thursday 9 May 6:15pm-9pm
- Week 3 Thursday 16 May 6:15pm-9pm
- Week 4 Thursday 23 May 5:30pm-8:30pm
Punctuality is expected and during weekly sessions participants should wear clothing suitable for moving around a basketball court in (runners/trackpants/t-shirt etc)
You can expect to be rostered for 2 games each Saturday for the first four weeks of your training. This gives you time to increase your knowledge and fitness and learn without being fatigued.
Please note that you can be rostered at any stadium that is used for our domestic competition - a list of venues can be found here. Please do not expect to be appointed at Keilor each week, this is not how our appointments work both during your training or after you are certified. We have over 230 games to cover each Saturday and we cannot have 100+ referees all wanting to referee at Keilor, leaving no one to cover the external venues. We try to limit travel where possible and can also work around your playing/coaching commitments where we can but please understand that our main objective is to service every game with two qualified referees.
During your green shirt journey you will receive feedback from on-court mentors and ref coaches /supervisors to help you improve. Some people will achieve competency quicker than others, we appreciate that everyone's journey is different.
