- Some watery blood may ooze from the area of surgery which is Normal.
- Do not spit, swish, or suck through a straw to prevent bleeding.
- Avoid rubbing the surgical site with your tongue.
- DO NOT SMOKE for 24 hours after surgery.
Rinsing
- After 12 hours (from the surgery), use a cup of warm salt water and let it soak in your mouth for 5 minutes 3 times daily for 5 days.
- Brush your teeth gently but avoid the surgical site.
Rest
- Get plenty of rest; 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Avoid strenuous exercise during the first 24 hours to prevent bleeding and discomfort.
Diet (1st 5 Days)
- Use a liquid or soft diet high in protein.
- Drink a large volume of water and fruit juices.
- Avoid hot, spicy, and crunchy food for the first 5 days.
- Avoid eating on the surgical site.
Pain and Discomfort
- Some discomfort is normal after surgery which can be controlled by taking over the counter comfort medications with food.
- Swelling is a normal body reaction and reaches its maximum about 48 hours after surgery, and usually lasts 4-6 days.
- Applying ice packs over the area for the first 24 hours (no longer than 20 minutes at a time) helps control swelling and discomfort.
- Over the counter pain medication can be taken as directed.
