Did you know there are 14 turtle species that call Kansas home? One is the ornate box turtle, also known as Kansas’ state reptile. This beauty has a yellow-striped shell, grows up to 5 inches in length and can live as long as 30 years.
The home range of an ornate box turtle is approximately 5 acres, and can consist of several burrows which are used for sleeping at night and to avoid extreme hot and cold temperatures. Unlike plated armor, the shell is a living part of the turtle, with the inner most layer consisting of bone filled with blood vessels to supply oxygen and nutrients to the living tissue, and nerve endings sensitive to touch.
