  • Professional Engineers Registration - ACT Application

  • Anyone providing a professional engineering service in or for the Australian Capital Territory is regulated by the Professionals Engineers Act 2023. Applications for Civil engineering service providers opened on 6 March 2024 and all providers of such services must be registered by 6 March 2025.

    IPWEA NSW & ACT will accept and assess applications from anyone seeking registration or registration renewal in the civil area of engineering, however, is unable to provide endorsement to practice as a professional engineer in the building industry. Application requirements are set out in our Assessment Scheme and applications will be accepted from IPWEA members and non-members. Our Assessment Scheme does not require participation in a certification scheme (e.g. CPEng; RPEng).

  • Competency Standards

  • Demonstrated competency in the following five elements of competence from the Australian Engineering Competency Standards Stage 2.

    Please ensure your evidence includes evidence of all five elements:

    Element 1 - Deal with ethical issues

    Element 2 - Practice competency.

    Element 4 - Develop safe and sutainable solutions.

    Element 6 - Identify, assess, and manage risks.

    Element 13 - Local Engineering knowledge, according to the civil area of practice including knowledge of relevant standards and practices.

  • Applicants are required to provided two referees to verify their experience and competence. Complete the following form and upload in the box below.

    Referees should include:

    • a registered civil engineer (or a civil engineer eligible for registration) you have worked with for at least one year
    • a manager / supervisor who you reported to for at least one year

    Note: At least one referee must have worked with the applicant within the last 5 years

  • Alternative Method for Satisfying Qualifications and Experience

  • As an alternative to the experience requirements specified above, IPWEA NSW & ACT will accept a shorter period of experience provided the applicant:

    1 - meets the competency requirements listed above, and

    2 - is assessed as competent to provide professional engineering services without direct supervision.

  • A minimum of three years post-graduate experience within the last 10 years will be accepted by IPWEA NSW & ACT if the applicant demonstrates competence as a result of accelerated learning (e.g. graduate program participation, mentoring by a registered professional engineer or endorsement by two referees) to the satisfaction of the assessor.

    Applicants seeking this option must clearly demonstrate how their experience meets the requirements for the alternative method, and include this information in the experience, competencies, and referee details above.

    If additional evidence is required IPWEA NSW and ACt will request this once the current evidence has been reviewed.
