The role of a sponsor is an important one for the sacrament of Baptism or Confirmation. A sponsor is a fully initiated Catholic who will support the newly baptized or newly confirmed by good example and instruction in the Christian life. In order to be admitted to the role of sponsor, the law of the Church states that the person must be someone designated by the parents (of a baby to be baptized) or by the individual who is going to be baptized or confirmed. To be a sponsor, the person must be a Catholic, at least sixteen years of age, and have already received the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation. In addition, the person must be living a life in harmony with the teachings of the Catholic Church in faith and morals.
