Partner in Employment's Refugee Youth Mentorship Program matches a community-based mentor with a newly arrived immigrant/refugee youth ages 15-24 in South King County, who will support their integration into a new country and help them thrive. In a trusting one-to-one relationship, these young people will have someone to seek advice in achieving education and career development goals, as well as fostering interpersonal skills and positive identity development. Mentors play a crucial role in youth confidence building through patience, encouragement, and dedication.
Examples of how mentors support their mentees:
- Providing positive encouragement and reinforcement!
- Practicing English (HIGH NEED)
- Building confidence through getting to know someone new, making a new friend
- Exploring new skills, passions, and interests
- Exploring new places in the community
- Applying for jobs, practicing interview skills, updating resumes/cover letters
- Tutoring for the GED program
- High School Academic Tutoring
- Applying for scholarships/Financial Aid
- Learning more about post-secondary pathways
- Learning about the banking system in the US
- Learning about different kinds of careers
- And much more!
Expectations:
- Must have a sincere desire to be a consistent, supportive figure in the life of an immigrant youth
- Must be comfortable interacting with individuals with very limited english ability.
- Must be able to meet mentee in person (or virtually) once per month.
- Must be able to send a text message check-in bi-weekly.
- Complete volunteer screening: Interview, Mentor Training, Background Checks.
- There is no definitive end date or expected time fram to this volunteer role. Once your mentee has reached their goals communicated at intake (time varies), they are exited from the RYMP program. You will have the option of continuing your mentor relationship un-supervised by the RYMP Volunteer Coordinator and/or continue with a new mentee.
