CE Credits: Participants will receive 2 CE Credits upon completion.
Child Guidance Resource Centers (CGRC) is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors to offer continuing education for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors. CGRC maintains responsibility for the program.
Description: This workshop provides an overview of common issues and concerns that clinicians may encounter when working with LGBTQ+ youth.art I will include a review of basic concepts relating to gender and sexual orientation. In Part II, participants will learn about the high rates of youths’ self-reported mental health challenges and concerns. Creating a welcoming clinical environment will be addressed in Part III. Part IV will identify a variety of treatment considerations, family dilemmas, and issues to explore in treatment.
Course Format: This 2-hour course will be held on-line via Zoom. The format will include a PowerPoint presentation and interactive participation using chat, small break-out groups, and large-group discussion. Participants will be encouraged to ponder the clinical, ethical, and practical aspects of brief case scenarios.
Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the difference between birth sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.
- Discuss at least 3 factors that contribute to mental health concerns experienced by many LGBTQ+ youth.
- Describe at least 3 issues/concerns that may arise when working with the families of LGBTQ+ youth.
- Identify at least 3 steps mental health professionals can take to make the therapy space feel safer and more welcoming to LGBTQ+ youth.
