Signups are underway NOW for the 2024 Weaverville/Douglas City Parks and Recreation District Junior Lifeguard Program. Participants must be between the ages of 13 and 14 years old and be able to swim the front crawl for 25 yards, tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs, show a level of comfort on the back floating for 30 seconds and swim 10 feet fully submerged underwater. This course is designed to teach water safety skills as well as introduce participants to the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard. This course will not certify anyone as a lifeguard, only build a foundation of knowledge, attitude, and skills in preparation of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Entry into the WDCPRD Junior Lifeguard course is $30, (there is an additional cost of $38 for participants completing their initial American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED certification, current certified card holders are exempt from additional cost.) By enrolling in the Junior Lifeguarding Program participants will also be enrolled in the WDCPRD Conditioning Camp on April 29th-May 9th. Participation in the Conditioning Camp is not required for completion of the Junior Lifeguard Program but there will be a large amount of swimming through the course. Space for this program is LIMITED so get enrolled now. Registration paperwork is available at the Parks and Recreation Office or downloaded online at wdcparksrec.com.
