  • ///// TRACES OF LISTENING ///// Listening & Field Recording workshop w/ Jez riley French (UK)

    20 / 21 APRIL '24 - VIC Aveiro Arts House
  • Led by renowned artist Jez riley French, this practical workshop on the act and art of listening will explore located sound through conventional and extended field recording practices, using various types of sound capture devices.

Over several decades, Jez's work has explored the roles of perception and imposition by listening to sounds that often escape our attention, revealing environments and architectures in wider contexts, or in microscopic detail. His main motivation is the listening itself, the technological traces that might result on a balance between their materiality and a need to lessen the weight of the faulty borders we construct around place.

  • The workshop will address the nuances of localized sound, field recording, and intentional listening as pivotal elements within sound culture, acoustic ecology, and contemporary artistic practices. Through discussions, practical exercises, and field sessions, participants will be encouraged to delve into the role of these elements, within the realm of sound art and the sonic heritage of the Aveiro region.

Participants will also have the optional opportunity to join the British artist in field recording sessions occurring on the subsequent days following the workshop.

A selection of field recordings resulting from the workshop and subsequent sessions will be used as raw material for the composition of eight sound pieces by national and international artists, constituting the volume From Chronos to Kairos, to be released on vinyl and digital as sequel to the New Chronologies of Sound sound art collection, which featured international artists such as Matthew Herbert, AGF, Kyoka or Lawrence English.
